Coastal Point Keeps Homeowners Connected and Healthy, Even When in Quarantine

The client of the property regularly has to self-isolate due to working with infectious patients, so Audio Impact developed a centralized control interface for this wellness-focused smart home.

Set on the coastline of California, Coastal Point posed a unique challenge to integrator Audio Impact in the design of its systems. A retrofit operating within the limitations of the existing home, the homeowner wanted a system that would provide adequate entertainment and wellness benefits to him and his family, while also being readily controllable from a single point during regular quarantines.

This later request came because of the homeowner’s profession. A doctor working at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the homeowner had a special room with separate access from the rest of the home where he would commonly self-isolate following exposure. Because he would be removed from the rest of the home during this time, he still wanted a means of interacting with the home systems.

To fill the needs of the request, Audio Impact enlisted Crestron to integrate music, access control, smart locks, motorized shades, intelligent lighting, an alarm system, garage door operation, a camera system, electronic switch glass for the bathrooms, heater floor control, and HVAC control throughout Coastal Point.

Because this retrofit is a coastal property, there were many permitting challenges, according to the integrator. Additionally, all outdoor equipment had to be heavily outdoor rated and corrosion resistant. The technology also needed to be well hidden so as not to detract from the overall design of the home.

Due to the framing, in many areas, Audio Impact was unable to hide motorized shades in the ceiling but still made sure the client had a full ocean view. The integrator addressed that high priority by incorporating valances that blended with the architecture. To assist the client’s wellbeing while spending time at home, Audio Impact programmed the lighting controls and DMX color-tunable fixtures to follow a circadian rhythm schedule.
